Tech giant Facebook has now rolled out Messenger Rooms, an alternative to other group video chat apps like Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. It is now available on both mobile and desktop, allowing upto 50 people to have a group video chat.
Users can start and share rooms on Facebook through News Feed, Groups and Events. Users can choose who can see and join their room or remove people from their room and can also lock the room. No time limit has been placed upon the duration of a video chat. Rooms can be created from Messenger or Facebook. Users can share links with people whom they wish to invite to the video chat. Anyone who has the link can join the chat, irrespective of whether they have a Facebook account or not.
This move comes amidst the growing popularity of group video chat apps like Zoom, which has around 300 million daily Zoom meeting participants. Microsoft Teams had topped 75 million daily active users recently. As videoconferencing has become a necessity, tech giants are putting their best foot forward to make sure that their services are used by professionals to work remotely. Millions of people are now relying on digital tools to communicate with their colleagues, friends and loved ones as the pandemic turns into a global crisis. With this move, Facebook is set to compete with rival videoconferencing apps like Zoom, which has been a popular choice among most people working remotely.
